Yet paint stains are surprisingly treatable if you act quickly and, crucially, if you correctly identify what type of paint you are dealing with. The removal strategy for water-based latex paint is completely different from that for oil-based enamel paint, and using the wrong approach can turn a manageable stain into a permanent one.

The single most important variable in paint stain removal is time. Wet paint — whether water-based or oil-based — is approximately 10 times easier to remove than dried paint. A paint droplet that has been sitting for 30 minutes can often be flushed out with water or solvent and show no trace after laundering. The same droplet after 24 hours of curing will require chemical intervention, mechanical scraping, and often multiple treatment rounds.

Identify the Paint Type Before You Do Anything

Before applying any solvent or water, take 30 seconds to identify what kind of paint created the stain. This step determines everything that follows. Here is how to tell them apart:

  • Water-based latex paint — Read the label on the paint can or tube. Latex and acrylic paints clean up with soap and water when wet. They have a mild or low odor. When dry, they feel slightly rubbery and can sometimes be peeled from a smooth surface in a continuous film.
  • Oil-based alkyd paint — These require mineral spirits, turpentine, or paint thinner for brush cleanup. They have a strong, distinctive solvent odor. When dry, they form a hard, glossy, durable film. Many exterior paints, metal paints, and traditional gloss paints are oil-based.
  • Acrylic artist paint — These come in tubes or jars and are used for art and crafts. They are water-based while wet but dry to a water-resistant, flexible plastic film (polyacrylate). They clean up with water when wet but require isopropyl alcohol or acetone once dry.
  • Spray paint — Typically solvent-based (enamel or lacquer), these contain fast-evaporating solvents such as acetone, toluene, or xylene plus pigment. The solvent flashes off quickly, leaving a thin, hard, pigmented film. Spray paint stains are among the hardest to remove because of the fine pigment dispersion and rapid curing.

Water-Based Latex Paint: The High-Success-Rate Scenario

Fresh, wet latex paint is the easiest paint stain to remove. If you catch it immediately, you have an excellent chance of complete removal. Turn the garment inside out and flush the stained area from the back with a strong stream of cold to lukewarm water — approximately 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Avoid hot water, which can denature the acrylic polymer binders and make them set faster. While the water is running, use your fingers to gently work the paint out of the fabric. Then apply liquid laundry detergent directly to the stain and rub the fabric against itself to create friction, which helps break the polymer emulsion. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if needed before machine washing at 30°C to 40°C (86°F to 104°F).

For dried latex paint, the approach is different. Latex paint cures by coalescence — as water evaporates, the acrylic or vinyl-acrylic polymer particles fuse into a continuous film. Once fully cured, this film is water-resistant. Start by scraping off as much of the dried paint as possible with a dull knife or the back of a spoon. Apply undiluted isopropyl alcohol (70% to 90% concentration) to the stained area and let it sit for 15 minutes. The alcohol penetrates the polymer film and causes it to swell and soften, making it easier to flake away. After the alcohol treatment, apply a heavy-duty liquid laundry detergent and work it in with a soft brush. Launder in the hottest water the fabric can tolerate. For stubborn residues, a second alcohol treatment followed by an oxygen bleach soak — 60 g of sodium percarbonate per 4 L of warm water at 40°C (104°F), soaked for 4 hours — is often effective.

Oil-Based Paint: The Solvent Approach

Oil-based paints — also called alkyd paints — use a drying oil (typically linseed oil or a modified soybean or safflower alkyd) as the binder, with pigments dispersed in a hydrocarbon solvent. When the solvent evaporates, the oil undergoes autoxidation — a chemical reaction with atmospheric oxygen that crosslinks the oil molecules into a hard, durable solid. This crosslinked polymer network is what makes dried oil paint so resistant to removal.

Scrape off wet paint
For wet oil-based paint, use a dull knife to lift away as much paint as possible without spreading it. Do not use water — oil and water don't mix, and adding water can actually drive the oil-based paint deeper into the fabric by emulsifying it with the mechanical action of rubbing.

Apply mineral spirits or turpentine
Place the stained area face-down on a thick pad of paper towels. Using a clean white cloth, dab mineral spirits (also called white spirit in the UK and EU, or petroleum spirits in Australia and New Zealand) onto the back of the stain. Work from the outside of the stain inward. The solvent will dissolve the oil binder, and the dissolved paint will transfer into the paper towel beneath. Replace the paper towels as they absorb color.

Blot, don't rub
Continue dabbing with the solvent until no more color transfers to the paper towel. This may take 10 to 15 minutes for a large stain. Be patient — aggressive rubbing can spread the stain and damage fabric fibers.

Apply dish soap
Once the solvent has evaporated, apply liquid dish soap to the treated area and work it into a lather with a small amount of water. This step removes the residual mineral spirits and any remaining oily paint components. Rinse thoroughly.

Launder separately
Wash the garment alone in the hottest water the fabric can tolerate, using heavy-duty laundry detergent. Add 120 mL of washing soda (sodium carbonate) to the wash to boost cleaning power. After washing, inspect the garment carefully. If any stain remains, do NOT put it in the dryer — repeat the solvent-and-soap treatment. Air-dry only.

Acrylic Paint (Artist and Craft Paint): Water-Soluble When Wet, Plastic When Dry

Acrylic paint occupies an intermediate position: it is water-based like latex, but the acrylic polymer emulsion in artist-quality paints forms a much tougher, more durable film than household latex. When wet, acrylic paint cleans up with water exactly like latex. But once dry, water will not touch it — the polyacrylate film has cured into a water-insoluble plastic. For dried acrylic on fabric, the most effective solvent is isopropyl alcohol (90% concentration if available; 70% also works but more slowly). Apply the alcohol liberally, let it sit for 20 minutes to penetrate and soften the acrylic film, then scrape gently with a dull knife. The softened paint will often lift away in pieces. Follow with dish soap and water, then launder. For extremely stubborn dried acrylic, denatured alcohol (methylated spirit in the UK, Brennspiritus in Germany) is a stronger alternative, but it carries a higher risk of damaging synthetic fabrics — spot-test with extreme caution.

The chemistry of acrylic paint curing: Acrylic paints consist of pigment dispersed in an acrylic polymer emulsion — essentially microscopic plastic spheres suspended in water. As water evaporates, the polymer spheres pack closer together and eventually merge (coalesce) into a continuous film. A small amount of coalescing solvent (often texanol or butyl glycol) aids this process. Once coalescence is complete, the film is no longer water-soluble. Isopropyl alcohol works by penetrating the film, causing it to swell and lose adhesion to the substrate (in this case, fabric fibers). The swelling action is physical rather than chemical — the alcohol molecules force their way between polymer chains, breaking the van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds that hold the film together.

Spray Paint: The Most Difficult Scenario

Spray paint combines multiple challenges: fast-evaporating solvents that drive fine pigment particles deep into the fabric weave, a binder system (often acrylic lacquer or alkyd enamel) that cures rapidly, and frequently, metallic pigments that are mechanically difficult to dislodge. If the spray paint is still wet, blot — do not rub — with a clean cloth to absorb as much as possible. Then treat as oil-based paint using mineral spirits. For dried spray paint, the prognosis is guarded. You can attempt repeated applications of a commercial paint remover specifically labeled for fabric, but be aware that the solvents in these products are harsh and may damage synthetic fibers or remove fabric dye along with the paint. For valuable garments, professional dry cleaning is the safest option — tell the cleaner exactly what kind of paint it is and how long it has been on the fabric.

Dried Paint: When All Else Fails

Dried paint on fabric is the hardest scenario. If scraping, solvent soaking, and laundering have all failed, you are down to a few last-resort options. Denatured alcohol is stronger than isopropyl alcohol and can break down cured acrylic and some oil-based paints. Apply it to the stain and let it work for 30 minutes, then scrape. Commercial paint removers formulated for fabric — such as Goof Off or Mötsenböcker's Lift Off — contain a cocktail of solvents targeting different binder chemistries and are more effective than single solvents. However, they are also more likely to damage the fabric or strip dye. Before using any of these products, ask yourself: is the garment worth the risk? For an expensive wool blazer or silk dress, professional dry cleaning with full disclosure of the stain type is the wiser path. For a pair of painting jeans or a work shirt, a last-resort chemical treatment may be worth attempting.

Environmental and Safety Note

Paint solvents are environmental pollutants. Never pour mineral spirits, turpentine, or paint thinner down the drain, onto the ground, or into storm sewers. These substances contaminate groundwater and are toxic to aquatic life. In the EU, the Water Framework Directive classifies many paint solvents as priority hazardous substances, and disposal is regulated. Allow used solvent to settle in a closed glass jar — the paint solids will sink to the bottom, and you can carefully pour off the clear solvent for reuse. Dispose of the paint sludge at a household hazardous waste facility. In the United States, most municipalities offer periodic household hazardous waste collection; in the UK, check with your local council for disposal sites that accept paint-related waste. For small quantities of solvent on rags, allow the rags to dry completely outdoors (laid flat, not crumpled, to prevent spontaneous combustion risk with oil-based products) before disposing in regular trash where local regulations permit.
