The Art of Drying a Down Jacket
Drying is where most down jacket washing failures occur. The key is patience โ a properly dried down jacket takes 3-4 hours in a tumble dryer on LOW heat. High heat can melt the delicate nylon shell fabric and scorch down clusters. Place the jacket in the dryer with 3-4 CLEAN tennis balls or wool dryer balls. Wool Coat Care: The Sustainable Classic
A well-made wool coat can last 20-50 years โ far longer than any synthetic alternative. Wool coats generally require dry cleaning rather than washing, but over-dry cleaning can damage wool by stripping its natural lanolin. A wool coat worn over a collared shirt (which catches skin oils) can typically go an entire season with just 1-2 professional cleanings, supplemented by at-home care: brush the coat after each wear with a natural-bristle garment brush (boar bristle is traditional) to remove surface dust and lint. Hang on a wide-shouldered wooden hanger (never wire) to maintain shoulder shape. For minor odors, hang the coat in a steamy bathroom for 20 minutes (while showering), which releases wrinkles, then brush and air dry. DWR Restoration: The Waterproof Shell Layer
Most winter coats have a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment on the outer shell that causes water to bead and roll off rather than soaking in. DWR wears off with use and washing โ typically lasting 10-20 washes. When water stops beading, the DWR needs restoration. There are two approaches: spray-on (like Grangers Performance Repel or Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On) which is applied while the coat is damp and then heat-activated by 10-15 minutes in a tumble dryer on low; and wash-in (like Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In) added during the rinse cycle. Spray-on application is preferred because it treats only the outer shell โ wash-in products also coat the inside of the jacket and the insulation, which can slightly reduce breathability. After applying DWR, the heat-activation step is not optional โ the heat reorients the polymer molecules to form a uniform water-repellent surface. Modern DWR products (post-2015) use shorter-chain (C6 or C0) chemistry, hydrocarbons, or silicone-based formulations that are significantly less environmentally harmful while still providing effective water repellency.
